What To Look For In An Outsourcing Partner

Outsourcing began as a way for companies to cut costs and gain access to expertise that was not available internally. By delegating parts of certain business processes to outside vendors, management could devote more time to core activities.

The trick is finding the right outsourcing partner. Finding the right vendor can take a small business to new heights. Finding the wrong vendor can be a disaster.

Characteristics Of A Good Outsourcing Partner

Experience And Expertise. One of the key reasons for outsourcing is to enhance a firm’s ability to focus on core business issues, while external professionals provide noncore products and services. Outsourcing partners need the expertise to handle these duties.

Expertise is often helpful in industries such as marketing and public relations. A small firm might hire a full-time public relations employee, but will that employee have the same contacts and expertise as an experienced public relations firm?

Efficiency. The ability to save time is also a primary reason small firms outsource.

Perspective. A good outsourcing partner also provides good, nonbiased outside perspective.

Trust. You don’t want to turn a portion of your business over to a company you don’t trust. Trust is an important issue. Learn as much as you can about your outsourcing vendor before the relationship starts.

Customer Service. Customer service usually starts with communications. You need understanding and a good relationship with your outsourcing vendor. Both parties must have realistic and reasonable expectations, and clear and concise communication on deadlines and job duties. Communication should include schedules and services. Outsourcing vendors should also understand what customer service means to your customers.

Commitment To Technological Innovation. Companies that outsource can focus time and money on remaining technologically competitive in core business functions, and also receive the benefit of the outsourced provider’s up-to-date information, equipment and technology.
