10 of Hundreds of Things Learned in the Life of Business (Which is not too far off from life itself)

By Dave Prouhet

When I originally wrote My Simply Successful Secrets I misunderstood what I was suppose to do. What I originally wrote were things I learned in business vice things I learned personally. So in the flavor of “My Secrets”, here are the rules for “My Business Life Lessons” (borrowed somewhat from Aaron Potts with his permission)

Here are the rules:

1) Create a new post to your blog listing the top 5 to 10 things that you have learned in your business life. These lessons can seem simple but took years to learn, or was a simple notion that struck you one day. The only thing is that you must have learned from it and and have moved on to new lessons. Ideally these can be gemstones that others can ask you so how did you get past that and your insight can be a guide for helping them as well.

2) At the top of the post tell your audience (briefly or at length) what you learned in business life and put a link and/or a trackback to this post, as I will be compiling a master list of the results after the conversation has run its course.

3) Be sure to also put a link/trackback to the blogger who tagged you for My Business Life Lessons in order to spread the link love.

4) Share your top business life lessons with your audience, which will in turn likely share those secrets with the audience of the blogger who tagged you.

5) Pick as many bloggers as you want and “tag” them to take part in the fun. You will be helping their exposure by linking to their site from your blog, and they will return the favor by having a link to your site in their initial post - just like the “Why do I blog?” meme that went around awhile ago.

6) Sit back and watch the business life lessons and the crossover audiences start rolling in!

Like Aaron, once I feel the conversation has run its course, I will tally all of the lessons that were listed by the bloggers who participated and put those into in a master list, categorized by popularity. I will then post that list in a new blog post on my site, along with a master list of links to all of the bloggers who participated.

Very simple, very easy. Everyone wins by learning the lessons of other people who are successful, and all of the bloggers who participate get cross exposure on this blog as well as the sites of whoever tags them.

To start the ball rolling here are

My Business Life Lessons

1) Start-up and test the idea out first before you pour a bunch of money into it. If it has demand, then follow it up create more demand and then as they say paper it up.

2) You can invest time, money or both. The more you put in the more likely you will continue despite the actual outcome.

3) Once you see that an idea has legs, commit yourself regardless of the circumstances. Commitment will see you though to the success you are seeking.

4) Steal this one from Anthony Robbins…There is no such thing as failure, only results. Same can be said for success. Only with success you tend not to learn the lessons that are to be taught.

5) Just because you change businesses, doesn’t mean you have learned your lesson.

6) Ideas have two components - applicability and timing - you need both to have success. Have had lots of great ideas before their time. Bummer.

7) Educating people on your great new idea (marketing and sales) can be expensive and difficult.

8 ) If you are looking for success, look for the pack and then improve on what they are doing. The Inc 500 is filled with folks like this.

9) There are too many opportunities. Pick the ones you enjoy and put your heart into them. Give and you will receive.

10) Get some cajones, and charge what you are worth…don’t under value what you have to offer. Walmart is one of the few low price stories to have been successful.
